Is this a variety of hops?

This is probably a stupid question, but does anyone know what this plant is? I thought it looked somewhat reminiscent of hop photos that I have seen but I am betting that I am wrong.

That is definately not Hops, and also not an hydrangea. It does look more like a tree shoot
 
Yes, I also thought that it was probably a sapling when I first saw it. The problem with that is that the leaf structure of the tree next to it was completely different. Besides the plant pictured growing straight up instead of vine-like, it looks very similar to this:
