Can you use PVC carboys for fermentation?

I saw clear plastic carboys at walmart for 8 bucks the other day. Will these work for a fermentation vessel? What about the plastic buckets at home depot?
 
I think you want HDPE or PETE/PET. The plastic buckets at hd will work if you are making 3.5 or 4 gallon batches. You need some headspace during primary fermentation.
 
Yeah, what s3n8 said. On the bottom will be what looks like a recycling symbol with a number in the middle of it. #1 and #2 are foodgrade and are usable as primary fermenters. PVC I believe is #7 and can leech chemicals... IIRC
