I don't see why not. Just don't try to boil in it! Cool the wort first.
Yeah I'll boil in a pan, cool and pour through a funnel.

Yep... I use 2-litre coke bottles all the time. You don't have to use foil either... you can just leave the lid loose. That way when you need to shake... tighten the lid, shake, loosen it back up... good to go.
I think I like your idea better. Diet soda sounds less likely to stick around too.
