Hi all, I haven't even purchased the ingredients yet but I have a few preliminary questions about my first brew. I'm doing the vanilla cream ale ( http://homebrewtalk.com/showpost.php?p=398005&postcount=481)

First question... Before I boil the 2 galons of water. Do I have to steep (boil, is that the right word) the 6 total lbs. of dry malt extract and 1 lb of caramel malt 60L in a muslin bag?

I'm sure you'll see plenty more threads from me about what to do next, I'm just beginning to get my head around this stuff, looking forward to getting started!

Yah...steep the grains like you're making a giant cup of tea, then boil. You can add the DME in the last 10 minutes of the boil if you'd like a lighter color.

I can see where the recipe would be confusing, though, what's with the mash schedule for an extract recipe?
