Hey All,

A philosophical question as it were. I brewed an Oktoberfest today but the recipe called for Irish Moss. Now, would adding Irish Moss to a batch of beer push it outside the bounds of the Reinheitsgebot?

Short answer: yes, it will be outside of the bounds.

If a recipe calls for something besides barley, hops, water or yeast, it is not Reinheitsgebot compliant. That does not in itself make it a bad recipe, just not one that follows the purity law.

For Reinheitsgebot purists, the addition of kettle coagulants is not allowed.
