I purchased a Brewers Best English Brown Ale kit and I hoping to brew this weekend. The yeast that was included is a Coopers 7g. I turned the package and noticed that it expired in 09. I know we are only technically, a few weeks past but I'm not sure I want to risk a batch with dead yeast. I have an extra package of Safale s-04 left over from my last batch of cider a couple weeks ago. Would this be an appropriate substitute?

I am a bit concerned because I have read that Safale-04 can leave a fruity taste.

Never noticed that. I used it S-04 on a Porter with very nice results. I would not hesitate using S-04 if I was brewing a brown. Keep the temp around 68 or less and you should be good.
