Hey,

Can I substitute wal-mart granulated sugar for the dextrose in Ed's Afelwien. Any thoughts on this one? Also, if I should stay with the dextrose, where can I get it from? I tried Kroger and they don't have any. Maybe wal-mart? Or the local brew store?

Thanks!

If you leave it long enough, it will be fine. Dextrose is 2 table sugars. Dextrose is a monosaccharide, sucrose (table sugar) is a disaccharide, which when broken down results in dextrose or glucose (both monosaccharides). Dextrose would be slightly easier to ferment, but if your yeast is healthy it will eat it up. Many other beers use disaccharide sugars. Go for it!

Wow! Thanks for all the quick and informational responses! This leaves me with a great wealth of choices! I might have to make 4-5 different 5 gallon batches to see what I like best.

Thank you all for your time and knowledge!
