I just returned home from a business trip to Hawaii where I tried Kona brewing co's Wailua wheat and loved it. Here in the interior of AK where I live I can't find passion fruit to reproduce their beer. I did find a frozen concentrate called "Hawaii's Own passion orange". Has anyone used these frozen concentrates and had success? If so how much is recommended? Thanks in advance for the assistance!
Cheers!
Tony

I haven't used that particular frozen concentrate, but have used them in many batches in the past. I like about 3 12-16 oz cans for a 5 gallon batch, but that all depends upon how much fruit flavor/aroma you want in the final brew. I would start with 2 cans and go up/down from there based upon your preference.

I haven't tried this juice yet. I'm going to make a can and see if it'll add what I'm after first. If I like the taste I'm hoping that the two can method will give the subtle fruit addition I'm after.
Did you just add the concentrate thawed or did you make the juice and add it?
Cheers!

I remember having that juice in a can when I was in Hawai'i. Sadly, it's not the same as real passion fruit. It's kinda like how cranberry juice is always mixed with other fruits to make a beverage because cranberries are more expensive. This is a similar case but hopefully it'll work for your beer.

Thanks!

I would let the containers warm up to room temperature and pour them in to the carboy that way, without making up a juice and adding water. I would advise against boiling it because you will probably drive off some of the volatile fruit aromas that you seek in the final product. I've used frozen concentrate in many batches already and have always used this method without any infection.

I would skip the cheapo frozen juice mixes that have a boatload of other crud in them. Instead, I'd get a syrup, extract, or puree.

Here are a few that I just found quick, but I'd look into a some more info on them.

I know shipping to AK might be the stretch, but it is worth it to get something that is "right" rather than make it and hate it.
