Check this out. When you use what you have you do amazing things. This guys used a Douglas fir as the trellis.

Originally when I was getting ready to make a trellis, was thinking...man what am I gonna use? So, I cut down a few trees for my poles and ran high tensile fence wire through them (which I had laying around). It seems to be working great. I sunk them about 4'.
 
I've been thinking about doing this up the side of a River Birch I have. But I suspect that it would be a PITA come harvest time. But on the other hand I think it would look awesome.
