I want to try to brew this beer this weekend, what do you think the conversion for using DME would be and how/which malt would be best for steeping?

Basically steep the crystal grains for 30 minutes at 150 degrees, and just convert the base malt to DME (0.6x) or LME (0.75x) at the respective ratio.

Base malt:
6lb light DME (Or 7.5lb LME) (add half at start of boil and rest at 5 minutes remaining)

Crystal grains for steeping:
1.5lb Caramel 20L
1lb Carafoam

As for the hop schedule, that would depend on how big of a boil you do. If you do a full boil, throw in the same as above. If you don't, we can dial up the hops to match the IBU's calculated for the all grain recipe. So, how big of a batch and how big of a boil are you planning on doing?

So I ended up brewing this 9 days ago. I ended up going with 5lbs of DME all at 60minutes. Crystal grains for steeping, 1lb Caramel and 1lb 2 row.

Hop schedule:
1oz 60min Cascade
.5oz 30min Cascade
.5oz 20min Cascade
.5oz 15min Cascade
.5oz 5min Cascade
.5oz 5min Citra

Will dry hop with .75oz Cascade & Citra with 1 week to go. Will let ya know how it comes out.

and Galaxy dry-hopped. Hard to get hands on Galaxy though

Afraid the galaxy is pretty important, I got lucky and found some here in Athens. It's absolutely the backbone of the beer.

Sounds like yours will be nice though, hope it's delicious!

Why are there so many dicks on this forum?

I've had people taste this, it tastes right on the money. Don't believe me? Don't respond! It's that easy.

Guess I'm a dick, but this beer tastes and smells nothing like Amarillo. Thanks for the post!

Send me a bottle. I'll pay for shipping. I'll give you a completely honest review.

I'm a huge fan of this beer. More importantly, my wife is. Which means I'll be brewing the best clone I can come up with.

Here's what we know from Terrapin's website (http://terrapinbeer.com/brew/year-round/recreationale/):

OG is 11degP. This works out to 1.044. Since ABV is 4.7%, we can calculate that they shoot for 1.008 FG.

Per the website:

Malts: 2-row Pale, C-24, Victory
Good luck finding C-24. We'll go with C-20.

Hops: Bravo, Centennial, Zythos, Amarillo, Galaxy (Dry Hop)
I'd bet they're using Bravo for their early bittering addition --it's not very useful anywhere else. The rest is likely hopbursted.

I've seen the IBUs listed as 42 but I'm not seeing that on the website. That seems close so we'll go with it.

Here's what I came up with:

This is next on my brew schedule. I'll let you know how it turns out and post as a new recipe if it's close.

On the original recipe, how much water did you use for the BIAB phase? I find that if I start with anything less than 7 gallons pre-boil, I'm not going to end up with 5.5 gallons at the end.

All depends on your own kettle, air temp etc. my boil off at this time of year in Georgia is about a gallon over an hour, so I start the boil with 6.6/6.7 to account for some hop gunk loss

Just racked my clone to the keg. It's damn near spot on. I nailed my OG and FG, so my clone is dead on at 4.7%. The only difference I can detect is in the malt backbone. As much as I love Rahr 2-row, it's a bit too light and delicate for this beer. One of my favorite things about RecreationALE is that it's not hop water like so many other Session IPAs. When I brew v2, I'm going to use a more flavorful 2-row --possibly Maris Otter.

You are correct in the hop bursting. I recently met Spike and he told the group that he has been experimenting with hop bursting for the last couple of years.

I'm not brewing an exact clone, but I'm brewing a pale ale with a hop burst of Rakau hops I got for free at a BSG booth. They're supposed to add an apricot and piney flavor so I'm hoping it comes close to those characteristics I love about the RecreationAle

Good post. Good summer brew. I would have guessed wheat was in there but not according to Terrapin. I find the victory interesting. I have biscuit which I think is equivalent. My 5% pale is similar but going to try Pearl / british style base, caravienne, & biscuit as a base with on-hand hops like amarillo simcoe centennial. I have never made it to sub-1.010 fg, but will mash low with starter to try. Thoughts on yeast? 1056 or 1272 maybe? I like the latter but use 1056/wl001 a lot. Happy brewing!
