Hey everyone, a few days ago i was at the pub and had a brown ale, dont recall hte brand, but i do remember it had a distinct taste of cough syrup to it. it was pretty f-ing nasty but i was pretty nasty f-ed so i didnt know what was going on.

what was wrong with this beer? was it infected? did the brewery do something wrong during its creation? how do i advoid this at home?

yuck :(

It could be infected but some of the higher alcohols "fusels" as well as some of the stuff created by vinegar bacteria can create a cough syrupy taste. but Id assume higher alcohols Ive had this problem with mead that needs a decade or two to mellow out. phenols created by brettanomyces can create a mediciney flavor too, but thats usually more of a band aid flavor than a cough syrup flavor.
