I have a recipe that says the post boil volume is 6 gallons. Would that make this recipe a 5.5 batch size?

Post boil volume will need to subtract loss from the boil kettle and loss from the carboy (both of which varies depending on your setup).

For purposes of calculations, I would call that a 6 gallon batch. The OG won't change regardless how much of it you are able to transfer into the fermentor.

Some people dump the entire kettle into the fermentor, some leave a bit behind. In either case, the starting ingredients are the same quantities.
