I know this is a very hard question to ask, but i figured i'd give it a shot.

Is there a "color wheel" to the suspected color of the brew? Like the steam roller stout i made had very dark grains, and came out black as night. then i did the sunshine wheat with light grains and it came out much lighter.

is there a rule of thumb?

like, the darker the grains the darker the brew?

(i'm looking for something to come out "burnt orange" if that helps any.... and it might be worth posting on the wiki)

The malts chart has the SRM values for the various malts. To calculate it for a recipe you'd have to run the values for the various malts through a formula (which escapes me at this moment).

nice! this was exactly what i was looking for!

If you use one of the major software programs (Beersmith, BeerTools Pro), it'll show you the expected color, as well. I know, that's cheating - but it makes it easy to see what you're brewing, and it'll also tell you if you're within guidelines for a particular style.
