Adding water after primary

I swapped my breakfast stout after about 1 1/2 weeks into a secondary. There was so much junk at the bottom that there was about 1/2 gallon less than the original 5 gallons. Would it be OK to add water to bring it back up to 5 gallons? Why or why not?

I would just go with what you have left. It would only dilute it at this point and of course risk infection. I mean I guess you could boil some water and mix it up, but it would be like adding ice to your beer and water it down.

Don't add water, it would dilute the beer and risk infection.

Unless that's what you want, then go for it.

I think one of the most important realizations I had when I first started brewing was getting over the idea that brewing a 5 gallon recipe should mean that I end up with exactly 5 gallons.

some recipes start with 5.25 or 5.5 gallons of wort...

my first batch, I ended up with 4.3 in the bottle, third batch 4.6

I would much rather have 4.5 gallons of properly brewed beer, than dilluting it post fermentation...
