This weekend I'll be brewing a Fat Tire clone. The recipe I have calls for 5AAU's Brewers Gold hops. Of course I was unable to locate a supply so I am substituting Galena hops. My question is this...

Would the required AAU's stay the same for the Galena? Galena being more robust I would charge about 2/3 as much, right? Brewers Gold Alpha=8.5-9.5, Galena's Alpha is 12.0-14.0

Thanks in advance, great forum!

If the recipe calls for 5 alpha acid units (AAUs) of bittering hops, then add enough hops so that the alpha acid of the hops times the amount equals the AAU amount. Keep the AAUs consistent, regardless of the hop type.

For example,

with 5% AA hops --> you need 1 oz (1 x 5 = 5)
with 10% AA hops --> you need 0.5 oz (0.5 x 10 = 5)
with 12% AA hops --> you need 0.41 oz (0.41 x 12 = about 5)

The simple formula to determine the amount in oz is: AAU/%AA
