I'm in to process of trying to figure out how I'm going to redesign my trellis.

Anybody have any good advice on keeping your hop plants contained?
My second year cascade had runnier that was 2 inches in diameter and 4 feet long before it can out of the ground....lord only knows how much more ran directly under my Nugget plant.

Pics of current setup. Excuse the mess... it's from my fall clean up last year.

This year it became a solid wall of green where you see last years grow in the second picture.
I think they just need more vertical room to grow but I don't want the to become invasive in the yard so I need suggestions.

Get some corrugated steel or better yet, some old real estate signs, and trench between the plants. Bury the sheet steel to "box in" the plants.

I boxed mine in 3' x 4' squares 18 inches deep.

And I still have to root prune. These dudes are opportunists and will find any cracks or holes they can and spread. Boxing in and root pruning are your best defense to maintain a proper hanging garden.
