I don't have a flash to make the starter in, what other common house hold items might i be able to use safely. I was thinking maybe a growler but am unsure.

I just use a pot on the stovetop and pour it into a sanitized 1 gallon glass jug.

Empty pasta sauce jar with tin foil on the top. Empty lipton iced tea jar with foil on the top. Got any bomber bottles lying around? Just throw some tin foil on top. Might not be able to get a stir bar to work on some of these because of the concave bottom, but it beats a stick in the eye.
