i shed a tear. when the level finally settled down after furious fermentation i was .25 low ! i had it coming it was a 1.055 beer in a 5 gal carboy !
 
I probably just blew .25 gallons off my Dubbel as well. Of course, that was a 4L starter of WLP530 in a 5.75 gallon pail (with silicone stuff)...
 
Fermcap doesn't solve all when your carboy is too full! Did you see these photos:

Also, I added the fermcap right to the carboy, so maybe it didn't get mixed in real well.

Yeah, but I'm betting that if you hadn't added any fermcap, it would have blown off even worse. It's not going to totally eliminate the chance of a big blowoff, but when you do blow it should help some at least.
