How is it that everybody gets gravity readings? Everytime I brew I mix up some Sanstar and have a bucket of it for everything but to just sanitize the stuff to get a gravity reading it seems a horrible waste of water. Is there any other method to sanitizing just the tube etc. for sucking some out to measure?

When I take a gravity reading from the secondary, I only sanitize my tukey baster. It uses less than a gallon of water.

I only take a gravity reading when I add to primary and at racking. This way I have other stuff to sanitize anyhow so.... no additional stuff to do really.

Sanitzers such as Star-San and Iodophor can be re-used. Store them in a covered bucket similar to your bottling bucket for several months.
