What would be wrong with aerating the wort during primary fermentation?
As long there is active fermentation, why couldn't I take the lid off the fermenter and stir it up real good, put the lid back on and let it finish?

How is that any different than introducing more oxygen at the beginning?

Is it too late for oxygen once fermentation has started?

You only want oxygen during the yeast growth phase (at the beginning) because the yeast will use up all the oxygen. After the yeast are finished growing you will only generate off-flavours (like wet cardboard). Once you pitch the yeast you don't want to be introducing more oxygen.
