Well, Campden tablets contain metabisulfite and actually release sulfur dioxide in use, so it's not too surprising the keg smells like eggs if there's nothing for that sulfur dioxide to react with. But once the keg is filled with wine or beer the sulfur odor should quickly disappear...

Campden tablets contain a metabisulfite salt. When dissolved in water (and also reacted with an acid, such as citric acid, which I imagine is what you were given) they release sulfur dioxide.

This is probably what you're smelling.
