5 gal plastic water bottles as carboys

Has anyone ever used those big 5 gal plastic water bottles you can get at the grocery store as a carboy? If so, how'd it do? If it worked, seems like that would be a pretty cheap, sturdy alternative for primary and secondary, etc.
 
It depends on the type of plastic. See this thread.

The only problem with these bottles is that if you are making a five gallon batch in a 5 gal bottle, you are going to have little to no headspace.
