Thoughts on Wyeast 1388- Belgian Strong

Im looking to make a Unibroue- Chambly Noire type beer. A Belgian Dark that is fruity/malty. I was going to get the Wyeast 3864- Canadian Belgian but it is out of season.

So Im thinking of going with 1388. Good call? Will it give me similar characteristics? I know that is what Duvel uses.

I used both now and think they are almost alike. Both are clean for Belgian strains.

3864 is an AMAZING strain... The 1388 is nice but man, I'd hold out.

I'm going to make 10 gallons of BGS and split it with each of them. I was actually disappointed with it because it was so much like 1388.

I'm looking to make a belgian strong ale soon as well but I've been told I'll need to use a yeast starter. Is it necessary with the Wyeast you used?

I like it, it attenuates well and kicks off some nice banana'y esters.
