Issues after adding secondary regulator..

Hello, I am new to the forums and to at home kegerators. I purchased a kegerator starter kit and built it no problems. Its your basic kit with a single regulator (this one http://www.beveragefactory.com/draftbeer/regulator/double/premium_double_gauge_542.html) and tap. I decided after a few kegs I wanted to step up to a dual regulator setup with two taps so I could dispense multiple beers and regulate the co2 to each keg independently.

Last night I hooked up the secondary add on regulator which I connected to my primary regulator and got everything going. Here is where my problem is: my secondary regulator (this one: http://www.beveragefactory.com/draftbeer/regulator/single/641-ADDON.shtml) (which is hooked directly to the co2 tank) is working perfectly at 12 psi but the primary regulator which hooks into the secondary regulator will not keep the pressure at a low amount (10-13 psi). It seemed to for awhile but then I checked it an hour later and the primary gauge was showing 40 psi! I have tried unsuccessfully to get the regulator to stay at the standard pressure... Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas of what I need to look into?

Where 1 is your original regulator assembly with the tank gauge and 2 is the new regulator assembly attached to #1 via pipe nipple, correct?

Is it possible you damaged the original regulator taking the tank fitting off? Do you have another gauge, such as this, to confirm that it is really putting out 40psi?:

Setup is how you described. I do not have an additional gauge to test but I did dispense some beer when it was showing 40 - 45 psi and the beer came flying out of the tap (filled a pint in under a second). Once it dispensed the pressure dropped slightly but then worked its way back up again...

Edit: I don't believe I damaged the primary when taking it off the CO2 when installing the new one, nothing fell, banged into anything, etc...

I think you may have gotten dirt or debris in the regulator causing "creep" of the gas past the spring valve. For sure the spring valve is failing and the low-pressure side will exceed the pop valve (about 55psi). You could try to clean the valve by taking the regulator off and letting some air pass thru (lowest pressure). Since the valve is new, it may be under warranty and you could get a free replacement. Taking the entire valve apart is quite a chore and may be the ultimate last resort.

Beerman is probably right. The best thing you can do is to take it back apart and inspect for visual problems. All of my regulators came with sealer on the threads that crumbled off as the parts were removed, something like that making it into the regulator body would explain the problem.

sirhcman - you aren't laying your co2 tank down once you have it connected to your regulator bank, correct?

Well I unhooked the regulator and sprayed some low pressure air through it but that didn't really help. It seemed to hold for awhile then an hour later it was maxed out again. Guess I need to attempt to return/exchange this regulator as its less than 2 months old
