Carbonating Corny Keg for First Time

I am about to carbonate my 5 gal. corny for the first time.
Can some one explain how to carbonate the keg in the gradual (2 week) method?

Get it cold, connect the gas, set it to 12 psi and wait a week. Life will be good.

Ed, do you have to purge it to remove the oxygen in the keg?

Oh yes. But that is a procudure done when before you rack your beer to the keg. First sanitize your keg, hook it up to gas, open the valve for a couple seconds then close it. Now vent the keg. Repeat this a few times. This will purge the air from the keg and now CO2 will form a protective layer at the bottome.

Look at this pic. The mist in the keg is CO2 from purging.

really? you are supposed to charge the keg before you rack to it? i have never heard of this...

You can also purge after you fill the corny. I do like Edwort does, plus I purge it after I fill it. Since there is less headspace, it uses very little CO2.

so since the co2 is heavier, it will sink to the bottom and rise with the beer?

that's the concept behind it.

I just fill and purge a few times after racking and have yet to notice any stale/oxidized flavor in my kegs.

honestly I think if you're gentle with it, any technique works. its really just more insurance.
