is there any reason that I couldn't/shouldn't make my control panel out of wood? gathering equipment now for my electric setup and thought I could further customize if I construct my own control panel box.
 
Yes, if the electrical components heat up due to over current or ground fault situations, arch due to a poor or lost connection, or otherwise fail, they will create heat. This would be a definite fire hazard in a wood enclosure.
