My LHBS was closed for vacation, so I grabbed a Brewer's Best American Pale Ale locally. O.G. is 1.051-1.055. I would like to hop it up a bit more. The kit came with 2 oz. Cascade and 1.5 oz. Willamette. I also have 1 oz. of Chinook on hand. I prefer a citrusy APA like Sierra Nevada but I want a little more. Should I pass on the Willamette and go with Chinook for bittering and Cascade for flavor and aroma?

I'd probably do the following:

  • Chinook @ 60 (enough to hit target IBUs)
  • .5oz Willamette @ 10
  • .5oz Cascade @ 10
  • .5oz Willamette @ 0
  • .5oz Cascade @ 0
  • .5oz Willamette (dry hop)
  • 1 oz Cascade (dry hop)

Or something similar. Definitely dry hop.

I'd use 'em all to get about 40 IBUs:

0.5 oz chinook at 60
0.5 oz chinook at 15
0.5 oz cascade at 10
0.5 cascade at 5
0.5 willamette at 5

7 day dry-hop: 1 oz cascade and 1 oz willamette

Cascade is a one-note hop, so I'll add my vote to using Willamette as well. BBG has a good schedule.

Thanks.

Stupid question. Can adding pellets to the secondary be regarded as dry hopping or do I need to add whole hops? All I have is pellets.

I dry hop with pellets too. In fact, I just transferred my APA to secondary today and added 2oz of hops. :)
