So to get my beers tasting as great as possible, I've decided to start adding any LME in a recipe as a late addition. A lot of kits seem to come with LME, so I figure this is a good way to deal with it; when I make my own recipes I stick with DME and large grain bills for steeping/PM...

My question: When you've got say, 2lbs of two row, maybe some other fermentables from 1.5-2.5 lbs of other grains, do you need to add some extract when the boil starts to keep hops utilization high, or are the fermentables present from the PM enough?

question part b - when is someone going to come out with a beertool/beersmith kind of thing with the late extract addition included in the math?

oh, it probably does, maybe i need to use beersmith over beertools then...

Hops utilization is highest in straight water. There is some impact on the maximum IBU, which doesn't matter if you are under 100.
