Amen Yoop. I hate most of what cell phones are used for. Many people don't seem to be able to communicate normally these days unless they do it by texting. I recently had to get a new phone as my was stolen The sales person looked at me like I had 3 heads because I told him I only wanted it to make calls and get calls. nothing more.

My wife is a school teacher and can confirm that the literacy, spelling, and grammar of today's students are being killed by texting.

I don't "get" texting (Firefox tells me that's not a word) My nieces use this text lingo and I can't read it. This really annoys me ;p why would I type something I would never do in the real world. If someone did that to me on the street I'd smack them in the head.

Could some one please translate all this for me, I have a hard enough time learning the LOL/ROFLMAO's and all that crap with out creating new words. How the hell is plox = please?

My father in law uses that crap when he texts me. I've never, ever used it and am utterly embarrassed when I get a text from him.

And Gila, your attempt at 1337 reminded me of ASCII porn from the late 80's and early 90's, I just couldn't figure out what you were doing to that poor cat...

You can run and hide. You can say, "No." But you will just go the way of the dinosaurs. The kids are texting that way, and it comes out in their writing. I am a teacher. I fight it. They are not allowed to text-speak in school, and I agree that we shouldn't use it here either. But, it is a new way of communicating, and it is faster when on a phone. Still, on the phone I don't use it, because I just can't. I just can't stand seeing my writing that way. However, it doesn't bother me when I am texted that way. It has a place. Language is not static. It is always changing.

I am 30, my Mom sends me text messages exactly like the ones described in here. I loath textspeak. I'll use LOL, OMG, FTW... those are pretty common and typing out Laugh Out Loud just doesn't seem right. acronyms are fine, but wot, u, C, Gr8, etc etc. I refuse to following along.

I'm with you all the way, Yoop! I'll go you one better. I'm 46 years old, an IT professional, and I have never in my life sent a text message. Too much room for misunderstanding when using texting or even e-mail. If a conversation goes more than one e-mail plus a reply, I'm on the phone talking with the other person. If somebody sends me a text message, I immediately call them to see what they want!

But, it is a new way of communicating, and it is faster when on a phone.
I don't buy it. Most phones have full keyboards now. Also, the lack of consistency in abbreviation makes it hard to read. Though it may take half a second less to type an abbreviated message, it takes a few seconds more to interpret it.

Get off my lawn.

I have a neighbor in her 40's. If you ask her question and she doesn't know the answer, she replies, "IDK". It's worse than fingernails on a chalk board (for those of us that have seen a chalk board)

I'm with you.

Ed, you mean when having a face to face conversation she literally says "IDK" rather than I don't know. I'll want to punch her right in the throat for doing that.

I have seen the stupid acronyms creep into conversation, too. When someone replies "LOL" to me in face to face conversation, it makes me want to kill a kitten!

I'm with you, Yooper! But just to get on your nerves, I think I will post on your Facebook wall in textspeak.... :D

Contrary to popular opinion, that language is not restricted to the UP. Around here we refer to that as "Sheboyganese"

I go out of my way to make sure that I use proper punctuation in all of my texts. Seeing some of the **** that I get (and that some people send in general) makes me sad about the state of people nowadays.

And what does it say about me when I'm 26 and agreeing with some of you old farts ? Well, I think I agree, but I didn't really bother reading the whole thread. I read the first post, skimmed the rest of the first page, skimmed the last page and wrote this reply.

I can't stand it when someone does that crap. it's bad enough when my 17 year old son does it (the 19 year old knows better) but when my BOSS does that crap when sending an email or instant message.. come one.. is it really that hard to type the words. if you can't spell, then LEARN or get Firefox since it has a built in spell checker

I had a new guy working for me and he had to send a report out to some people a couple layers higher than me. He used some text speak in the email. When I got my copy I sent him a reply to use full words and punctuation. Three of the others sent him or me basically the same email.

he didn't last long.....

y u so mean?

lol!

Sorry, didn't mean to get mean. I just turned 40 and got carried away playing grumpy old man! :D If it helps, I did have snow in my room growing up.

I must admit, the prevalence of text speak bothers me too, but I also do it myself from time to time. It bothers me most when I suspect the person using it isn't doing so as a deliberate choice.

sorry to go :off: and yooper, u r gr8! :rockin: (even if you don't like 733t spk:cross:)

I'm with you too yoop. Another thing that annoys me is when old people don't know that it's yelling to type in all caps. It's the other end of the spectrum.

EDIT: I JUST TYPED THAT IN ALL CAPS, YET THIS SOFTWARE DOES FIRST CAPS AUTOMATICALLY. I DIDN'T KNOW THAT UNTIL JUST NOW.

EDIT: APPARENTLY UNLESS YOU ARE EDITING IN WHICH CASE ALL CAPS SEEMS TO WORK.

gd 4 u. glad 2 hear it.. lol j/k hehe.. i hate it too. if people are in such a hurry they have to do that, why are they here?

by the way: no txtspk 4 me i c u r gr8

Thing is the text speak did make sense when people first used it, at least over here, texts were charged per character so there was a massive advantage in typing gr8 over typing out great. Nowadays with T9 and charges per text there is absolutely no excuse.

I'm with you too Lorena. It kills me when people type in text speak. Even when I send text messages I spell out every word along with using punctuation and capitalization. It's one of my pet peeves.
