My recipe says

Boil size is 6.5 gal
Batch size is 5 gal

What exactly does this mean? I want to boil 6.5 gal of water + sugars?

Thanks from a newbie brewer! :mug:

After you boil for an hour, take out the trub and leftover hops, you get about five gallons.

You tend to lose about a gallon of water per hour of boiling and you have to account for the trub at the bottom of the pot, like trevorc13 said. BUT, you also can boil about 3.5 gallons, pour that wort into the fermenter (after cooling it), and top it off water. Its called a partial boil. Alot of people, especially when first starting out, do it that way.
