Today's Haul

I went nutty today.

50 pounds of Shrier 2-Row
50 Pounds of Belgian Wheat
1 pound of rice hulls
1 pound of Caramel 60
1 pound of Caramel 80
1 pound of Caramel 20
1 pound of CaraPils
1 pound of Belgian Biscuit
1 pound of Belgian Aromatic
2 oz of Amarillo

I think I bought a few other grains as well. Can't really remember. I just started grabbing stuff. All-in-all, spent a little under $100. The HBS threw in a free long-sleeve black T-shirt as well.

Found out my LHBS is moving. Not too far, still under 20 minutes away.

Question is now, WHAT DO I BREW???

I'm thinking about a Hefe with some aromatic and caramel for an extra malty flavor.

I also stocked up today; in addition to the pound of whole Centennial that showed up at my doorstep, I went to the LHBS and picked up:

50# 2-row (+ another 6# crushed)
10# Vienna (+ another 2# crushed)
4# Crystal 40L
3# Carapils
2# Chocolate
1# Black Patent
1 # Roasted Barley
WLP051V yeast
and a bunch of equipment (tubing and disconnects to make some picnic taps, funnel, hop bags) and supplies (pH 5.2, etc).

The crushed grains are b/c Crankenstein keeps delaying the shipment of my mill, and I can't wait to brew anymore

Total bill: don't ask...my LHBS is damn expensive...but not quite expensive enough to justify buying bulk grains from an Internet shop. And while I'm there to get the grain, it just makes sense to get all the other stuff. In the long run, its in my interest to keep them in biz.

No such problem on "what to brew next", though...my next 5 batches are varietal variations on Bell's Two Hearted IPA (Half Hearted Bitter, Light Hearted Pale, Dark Hearted Brown, Black Hearted Porter, Whole Hearted Stout). Most of what I bought today will be gone in < 1 month, with any luck...

All Grain Recipe - Gumball Head Wheat ::: 1.052/1.012 (6 Gal)
Grain Bill (70% Efficiency assumed)

6 lbs. - Wheat Malt
5 lbs. - 2-Row Pale Malt
1 lb. - Caravienne Malt
Hop Schedule (27 IBU)

1/4 oz. - Amarillo - First Wort Hop
1/4 oz. - Amarillo - 60 min.
1/2 oz. - Amarillo - 15 min.
1.25 oz. - Amarillo - 5 min.
1 oz. - Amarillo - 1 min.
1.5 oz. - Amarillo - Dry Hop
Yeast

White Labs California Ale Yeast (WLP001) - 1800 ml starter
Mash/Sparge/Boil

Mash at 153° for 60 min.
Sparge as usual
Cool and ferment at 68° to 70°

Trust me, it's on the schedule. I should have bought more Amarillo. I want to get some Simcoe, so I'll probably end up buying a large amount of Am. soon enough. I just love the way it tastes in my Cream Ale.

All that grain and only two ounces of hops? You need to do some more shopping!
And what about yeast? You need a good selection of yeast on hand if you're gonna have 100# of base grain in stock. Shopping's fun though, aint it?!:cross:

Don't worry, you'll come up with plenty to brew. And you'll be amazed at how quickly you'll go through 50 lbs of grain, too!

It may have been $101 after tax.

$47 for the wheat
About $1.10ish for the flavor grains.
