6lbs light dry malt extract

.50 lb 20l Crystal malt

.50 lb. 40l Crystal malt

1 oz Chinook Hops (bittering)

1 oz Kent Golding's Hops (Flavor)

1 oz Fuggle Hops (aroma)


Start with 3 gallons in your boiling pot. Bring the grains and the water to 155 degrees and steep for 30 minutes.

Bring to a boil-remove from heat and add all malt extract.

Bring this to a boil and bittering hops. boil wort for 45 min.

add the flavoring hops. boil for an additional 15 min.

Chill wort to 75 degrees, top off to 5 gallons and pitch. (should be about 2 1/2 gallons)


Primary ferment for 1 week at temps below 75 degrees.

Dry hop (Aroma hops) secondary fermentation for 2 weeks.

Bottle or Keg condition for 3 weeks and Enjoy!

this is an extract brew. don't be scared to have your homebrew shop crush some grains for you, and steep them before you biol. you'll get a much better result than just using dry malt extract or all liquid extract. color will be better and tase will be "fresher"

Sounds like a good way to start brewing to me. I started this way.:mug:
 
been poking around for ESB recipes and found this old (dead?) post. love Red Hook, and it has gotten GABF noise lately - gold in 09.

@Blender was right on the Chinook. Red Hook posts their stats on their site - here is a cut/paste:

Style: Amber
ABV: 5.8%
Malts: Pale, Caramel, Carapils
Hops: Alchemy, Willamette, Centennial, Crystal
Color SRM: 13
Bitterness Units: 28.0 IBU
Original Gravity: 13.75 degrees plato
