I haven't done this yet. I am just starting my home brewing career, but is it possible to make a good clone of a quality beer by extract brewing?

Absolutely. Check out the homebrew stores online for kits to get you started. You can't buy the ingredients yourself for what they charge.

I completely agree. In some cases, I've made better extract kits than what the commercial one was.

I've been noticing this too, sometimes even for 2.5 gallon of hop forward IPA's the savings by splitting the recipe in half on your own seems somewhat negligible (unless your local will fill orders to the 1/8th oz. of hops).
