I was wanting to try the two stage method, but I don't have a 5 gallon carboy. My question is, why can't I just use a food grade 5 gallon bucket? I can pick one up at the local donut shop for like 75 cents. Is there a problem with this?
 
The biggest drawback to using a bucket as a secondary is the large headspace involved. Lots more room to oxidise your brew. But people do use them and still make good beer.
 
I have three seven gallon buckets & have never had a problem with oxidation (and not because I drink a batch in two weeks).

But remember: A pickle bucket is a pickle bucket forever.
