I have a Newcastle clone going gangbusters in the fermemter right now -- so much so, that I'm getting significant blowoff (5 gallons in a 6 gallon carboy). My question...Will I lose a lot of yeast through this way? Would going to a 7.5 gallon plastic ale pail be the way to go? It's fermenting well right now, so I'm not too worried it. Just want to be sure I'm not wasting anything. Thanks.

Pails are not immune.

Use a long enough hose to arch above the vessel some.

No they do not waste yeast-they SAVE labor.

I didn't know they worked for krausen, I thought they were just for boil-over?

No sir! They work great for fermentation as well.

I pitched a barleywine onto a previous S-05 cake, added a few drops of foam control, and barely ended up w/ any blow-off at all (5.5g batch in a 6g better bottle). For really big beers I still use a blow-off just in case, but for anything less than 1.080ish foam control is usually enough.

Also questioning the apfelwein blowoff. Same here--I don't get major foam on those at all...

For the OP: what temperature are you ferementing at?
