caustic soda

I was talking with my uncle this weekend who worked with Coca Cola for years.
He said they used caustic soda (lye) to clean the kegs. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I see absolutely no need to use caustic on the homebrew level. It is dangerous and unnecessary.

PBW is a much safer, equally effective cleaner for homebrewing purposes.

Caustic makes sense when your operation is large scale.

It can be a PITA to manage at a typical HBer level.

If you don't mind wearing gas-tight goggles, rubber gloves, boots, etc and have lots of old clothes, you really don't want to mess with caustic. Handled it on occasion in the Navy.
