I'm having an issue with my DIY stir plate. I followed the instructions on Brewiki, however the potentiometer only works if I turn it waaaaaaay down. Otherwise, at least 90% of the range of the pot only has the fan on full blast.

What did I do wrong? Is the 1K pot the wrong sized pot? Should resistance be higher/lower? Do my components need to be rated for higher wattage? (Some items, like the 100-ohm resistor, are only rated for 0.25W.) The potentiometer is rated at 2W. I fried my first one, which was only rated for 0.5W, so I beefed this one up a bit. Now the pot won't fry, but it hardly works.

Why isn't my circuit working?

EDIT: Starting to think my pot has too much resistance...

I discovered that the pot doesn't appear to be a linear taper like I ordered... It also may still have too much resistance, but I'll see if the place I ordered from can send new ones.
