So today I made up a starter so I'd have something ready for Sunday and so that I could try out my newfangled stir plate.

It's 6 hours later and I'm noticing little black particles floating up toward the top, something I've never seen in any of my previous starters.

The starter is same as I've always done them in the past, about 1/2 cup of DME and 1/8 tsp of Fermax boiled in to 3 cups of water, brought down to room temp, pitched WL Burton Ale 023 and then put it on my plate.

Any ideas on what this stuff is?

Oh - and yes everything was very clean going in.

Looks like fermentation by-products, proteins and trub material, I wouldn't worry about it.

That's kind of what I figured it was. Since it's all being stirred constantly it'd probably stuff that would be sitting at the bottom otherwise.
