Does the funnel i buy have to be food safe plastic? The reason i ask is i cant find one big enough unless i get one from the auto parts store.

I wouldn't use anything that wasn't food grade for my beers. My home brew store sells the large ones and there are plenty of vendors online.

It should be, but it depends on what you're comfortable with. Its a pretty short exposure to the liquid.
NB sells some fairly large funnels that have screen filters in them. They're pretty handy.
