I was brewing Craibou Slobber from Northern Brewer and got an OG of 1.049. While cleaning up, my hydrometer fell and broke. It was a standard triple scale one that came with my homebrewing kit. After fermentation, I used a new scientific hydrometer and got a FG of 1.055.

I haven't tried it yet because it is conditioning in bottles but based on these numbers, I get a negative alcohol percentage... I don't understand what happened or if I am calculating numbers wrong. I had good sized yeast cakes in both the primary and secondary fermenters so I expected everything to be ok. Should I just chalk it up to a difference in hydrometers?

I'd think the scientific one would be more accurate. But you got a higher OG after FG? Sounds like you're not reading it right?
