Another newbe question... Why do some of the kits i get say to boil for 30min while some of the others say 60min? Does it depend on the ingredients or is it better to boil for longer?

It normally depends if it's pre hopped or not.

Longer boiling allows you to do several things so it depends if you need to da any of the following.

Boil for 60 minutes to get oils from the bittering hops.
Reduce the gravity of the initial wort to make a stronger beer (For AG)
Drive off unwanted volatiles.

I'm sure theres more.

Depends on the recipe and type of brew.

If the kit says 30 minutes and you go 60 you may end up with less wort so in theory you should had more water at the beginning.
If it's your first time I'd stick with the recipe and see how it turns out.

6.6lbs of wheat malt extract
1oz german perle added with extract
1oz hallertau added at last 5 min.
doing a 4gallon boil

Thanks

A 30 minute boil will give you 26 IBUs.
Increasing it to 60 minutes will increase the IBUs to 34.

If you want to stay true to the recipe/flavor, don't change the boil time. If you like a bit more bitterness (8 IBUs isn't that big a difference), boil longer.
