I have been splitting my 11G batches in two fermenter, too many times. I have been waiting for scratch and dent brewhemoth as the wife wont approve the $400+ purchase. My main reasons for the conical are:

1. Collect and wash my yeast easier

2. Pulling wort off yeast bed (didn't secondary prior this should really help)

3. Not have to split batch into two fermenters

4. When I do a ferm chamber, a simple temp controller on fridge will easily work.

For those reason I'm going to build one out of plastic for now. I have read many of the threads on HBT and just wanted to have everything in one thread for others. It's as simple as 4 parts.

1. Ace Roto-Mold 15G Inductor Tank Full Drain (Model INFD0015-19)
I chose this model as it has 1-1/2" FPT on bottom and large 12" openning on top.

Haven't actually priced but I would assume $5 in parts from Lowes or HomeDepot

Stand will be made from scrap wood, nothing too exciting 4 legs and a sheet of wood with a large circle cut out.

Thanks everything for under $100 shipped. I will be pulling the trigger later today on all the items, but I wanted to get others opinions first. No need for a pickup side port as I've got the yeast catcher.

3) I agree with you - all you need is a quart jar. However, after reading all of spottedog's posts in both this thread and his thread, I decided to emulate his technique. Building and implementing this yeast catcher is, as you say, Easy Peasy... and it's an interesting concept that is worth trying, IMO. If I don't like it, maybe I can turn it into a bong or a planter or something...

Here ya go.

I'll be sealing it like that guy... silicone for the ring and weatherstripping to seal the lid. I plan to add a bulkhead fitting on top, as well, for not just blowoff and CO2 but also for filling it with wort. This way I won't move it when it's full.

Racking arm rotated 90 deg downward, leaves a measured amount of a little less than a quart when vacuum breaks on the siphon.
Depending on the wall thickness of your specific conical you may have to Dremel and fine tune the area at the hole, as this weldless fitting only permits about 2 threads to extend into the interior of the conical, which was plenty for the fitting to fasten to on one of ours. Also this is why we decided to use the Silicone O-ring in lieu of the silicone flatwasher that the fitting came with. So far we have done several runs on each conical and no leaks, racking works beautifully as it only needs to rotate once and 90 degrees. Cleanup and disassembly is a breeze, I only tighten as tight as I can with my hands, no tools required.

I am happy to answer any specific questions and edit this thread should this not be clear, or if I have left something out.

Amazon, it is 18 x 24 with a basket, handle and casters I dont recall the brand but there was only a couple options that were reasonable about $80. Very convenient to move 200lbs of liquid around and for cleaning, different ferm-temps etc...next project is to figure out an exterior pex tubing jacket or internal SS coil for isolated temp control.

Myself I would either add a 2nd port for racking or plan to drain thru a filter. You wont get all the yeast and trub out so you will get some when racking.
 
if this would work then that would be quite interesting especially considering models of scale considering the 85 gal is only $140 and shipping is roughly $30. So a 2 - 2.5 bbl fermentation tank for $170 shipped with then just some minor modification ($200-$250 total?)

I think the biggest concern I would see would be to ensure it's food grade and wouldn't impart any off flavors. The last thing you'd want is to have everything fermenting only to realize it tastes like sh*t due to the taste of the polyethylene.
 
One thing to note about that tank is that the stand does not come with it. I just got off the phone with them to check on the plastic type and he told me that it is separate. They do have another model that includes plastic legs but it only seems to go down to 35 gallon as the mininum size. Just FYI incase you were needing the stand for your design. Not too hard to come up with one on your own really.
 
yeah the plastic is food safe. just like using a bucket. the type of cleaner used is the only concern.

I mentioned building a simple stand out of wood.
 
the difference between food grade HDPE plastic, and non-food grade HDPE plastic (substitute "HDPE" for any other type of plastic), is the amount of other chemicals or contaminants (plasticizers, mould release agents, BPE...) contained in the plastic.

weather that matters to you is your own choice, but
those are not food grade.
 
well techinically I wrote "food safe", but if I miss informed I'm sorry. I will atleast state that several members have used exact tank, without offputting any flavors/smells.

I understand this will not be the quality of a SS conical, but it's also 1/5th the price.
 
ive seen these other places where they are food grade, but if i am not mistaken a bit more expensive?

if they are cheaper ones they could be because they were rejected for food grade.

Both meet FDA regulations upto 120 degrees (no ferm temps that high). I've been planning this project for several months so I'm rather confident everything is the cheapest I can find it and food safe.

Cleaning would require a PBW soak, rinse, starsan spraying.

how would you heat/cool something like this?

Most stick it in a big a$$ed fridge. If I were to get into this, I'd probably want two, as I typically have 20 gallons in fermenters at a time. My method would be a small dorm fridge with a glycol reservoir, and wrap them in tubing. Pump the glycol through and you're good to go, (vinyl would work fine, you don't need copper in this case, we don't care about high heat transfer, just consistant conditions).
 
Per US plastics I believe these are in fact food grade safe.

show me where either on that site linked, or on USplastics.com (these arent necessarily from US plastics; it doesnt specify that anywhere) it says these are food grade.

i cant find that anywhere, and i do not believe that they are.

simply putting them in a temperature controlled room will work. there is a bit of mass but ive seen a brewery use the 110 gallon model and simply use a temperature controlled room at 62 degrees (they primarily use cali ale yeast from white labs) with a simple ac unit attached. they also have large commercial fridges for lagers or beers they want more control over, but most of their beer is just thrown in these plastic fermentors in a controlled room.

anything more fancy than that is unnecessary imo, but if you like toys and really want to make sure you are controlling very closely you could build some sort of jacket or chilling rig. i have seen a SS insert that fits onto the lid that is glycol chilled used at another nano-brewery.

i cant imagine it wont work, but like i said. if you can fit in into the mini fridge and temp control the air, i don't foresee any issues. The brewery i speak of has great beer and i have never tasted any off flavors resultant from temperature problems in fermentation. and they brew a LOT, since they only do 3bbls at a time every two weeks its a new batch.

You'll have to update how it all goes... due to that cost, if it all works out and is safe I don't see why it isn't a more popular option.
 
Did the same last week. Brewed up 11 gallons and was tired of putting it in two carboys so I pulled the trigger. Tank should be here next week and cant wait to build it and try it!
 
is there a reason why a plastic PVC ball valve and threaded nipple can't be used instead of the stainless steel?

I like the idea of a decent conical for cheap... A little overkill for me now but if I ever goto 10 gallon batches... Would look pretty cool to have 5 of these lined up on a big rack! :)
 
Subscribed and watching closely. Just scored (2) 15g inductor tanks for free, but mine have 2" outlets. Still trying to figure out the hardware...

The yeast catcher is 1qt in size. I will list all the parts sometime today. I have one 15 gallon fermenter and one 30 gallon fermenter but the yeast catcher will most likely be larger for the 30 gallon vessel.

I'm using PVC parts for mine. I figured if the whole conical was plastic, what's the big deal with the valve being plastic.

I do make sure to thoroughly clean the fermentor out immediately after use and spray down with starsan for storage tho to minimize anything that might start on the plastic bits.
 
I agree with Shockerengr I think plastic would work just fine, as long as its food safe. I just figured stainless is pretty. Plus with the funds saved on the conical I can spend the extra $10 for a stainless ball valve.

I actually ended up ordering my conical and bulkhead from OhioValleyAG. I had been trying to find the cheapest price. I assumed they were located in Ohio, however they are not so it shipped from IN. I have worked in retail management for the last 10 years, I called to confirm it has 1-1/2" FPT bottom. The person I spoke with said the spec sheet claimed it did, but actually went to the warehouse to confirm in person.

I am not ready for this type of build at this time, turned my small chest freezer into a keezer and just finished a brutus single teir using three kegs that I am still tweeking, but... will add it to my ever growing list of crazy nice builds from HBT!!!

The lid by default is not air tight. I believe it's sold as air tight but in several other threads I've read that is not the case. Therefore I doubt you would be able to pressurize, however a small about of weather stripping or something else that might be safer around the lid might solve the problems. Mine is currently in transit I'll attempt to post pictures and tighten the lid, turn upside down and see if the lid is atleast liquid tight.
 
Interesting, the manufacturer is in Hospers IA, about 2.5 hours north of Omaha, NE. camiller begins plotting how to get this past the wife ...
