What amount of water should you use to sparge when you're batch sparging?

I used 1.25 quarts per gallon of water per pound of grain for a pumpkin ale, it's mashing now but I don't remember how much strike water I need.....

Do you have a way to measure the amount of liquid in your brew kettle. If so, you can just drain the mash into the kettle, measure your volume, then add the amount it takes to get to your preboil volume. You can assume that the grain will not soak up any more liquid during the sparge.

I think this process takes a couple of tries to figure out grain absorption, boil evap rate, etc. But it will get you close. if its not close, then you can top up with water during the boil if necessary until you get your system honed in. Shouldnt be too much of a problem..
