Here is a picture of a second year cascade working its way up the rusty tractor.

Hey man, couple questions about your setup.

How high are your posts? And how far in the ground do they go? Are they just backfilled with dirt?

Also, how are you collecting water in the barrels? Do you collect it from a different location then move them to your hop area and hoist them up your tower?

Thanks, looks great! Buddy and I are doing something similar and we're dealing with how we're going to plant and water since we're not close to running water.

It's the magic camera on my iPhone. It makes my .21 acre look huge. Oh. You weren't talking about my 3'x6' box with the 2 rhizomes? My bad.

My posts are 20' long but are 4' in the ground making them about 16' above ground. I just back filled them with dirt.
My hop yard is located near an old abandoned hand dug well that i installed a well pump in and have a generator powering it. I'll use the pump to fill the water tower approximately once a week during the dry season.

Do you think I need to be concerned about the lattice actually breaking this season? I have no problem taking them down in the fall and replacing them next year if warping is the main concern. I sure would hate to see the whole thing come down though.

I can't say if it would break or not. They're thin pieces of wood that are stapled together, which by itself isn't that strong. I've noticed some of them popping out and warping, but again I don't have them set up for hops. I would just keep an eye on it, as I don't think there is any reason for alarm right now.

This is my first hop garden. Yeah It looks small but this just for the first year to get them established while I redo the back yard and make room for hops!

The glacier seems to be going like gangbusters!

The centiniels are doing ok too.

The northern brewer rotted first planting. I ordered and planted new ones.

The Cascade and Chinook were starting nicely but cutworms got to them and snipped them off. So they are a little behind but I think they'll still catch up.

I have fortified my garden against cutworms! Hope this does the trick!

The nugget has slowed. It was the first to sprout but I think its a little shaded. I trimmed a nearby tree to give it more sun so hopefully it picks up.
The willamette has a second sprout and is reaching for the sky!
There has been torrential downpours here in CT, so I hope it doesn't encourage disease or rot. Warm weather is coming so growth better jump!

Sorry for the breakneck photos. GF sent em to me this morning and I just had to post right away lol

A friend gave me these Hallertau plants that he got from some dude who was moving. This is my first try at it, so I'll see what happens.

Here's my two first years...

Cascade and Zeus

Growing horizontal ain't so bad.

There a lot of little red baddies crawling around the cascade bucket, though I haven't seen any on the plant itself. Based on a google image search they look like spider mites, but I haven't seen any spider webs either. Should I be concerned? I've read ladybugs may help? Thanks for the advice.

I fought spider mites on my zucchini last year. I washed them off with a hose every day for a week and they disappeared.

Here's my first year garden.

Here are some pictures from today of my second year Centennials, Cascades, and Magnums. The Magnums are pretty much kicking ass in terms of burr production, followed by the Cascades. The Centennials also have quite a few burrs on them, but not nearly as many as the others. They're doing much better than last year, so I can't complain.

It's pretty crazy how differently they grow from each other. The Magnums have a million little side arms coming off of the main bines with light green leaves, so you know it's new growth, with around 10-12 burrs on each. The Cascades' main bines have burrs on them, as do the side arms, but the side arms are more straggly as compared to the Magnums' more bushy, burr-full side arms. The Centennials are similar to the Cascades but with less side arms and burrs.

Finally got around to taking some pics:

When I planned the spot for the raised boxes, I did not take into consideration how the tree to the left would fill out once the weather broke...I think they are getting a bit too much shade throughout the day...gonna move em over to the right a bit next year. Had to plant them outside the dog fence, of course:

Had a bit of leaf damage on the one Mt Hood due to aphids, but I think I have it under control now

Trying to add pics of my Hops. Put in the ground a few weeks ago, but they were in the shipping back for a few weeks before that, Only the Nugget Made it, reordered Cascade, Centennial, and Mt. Hood. All three have sprouted, but Nugget has a two week head start, and boy do these grow fast!!!

Just got my rhizome's in about a week and a half ago. The Cascade's took the early lead but the Willamette and Fuggle's are sprouting now too. They're getting bigger everyday... hopefully I'll end up with enough cones to make a Brooklyn Pennant Ale clone.

We got 7 straight days of rain while I was away and I came back to crazy bushy hops that are starting to bud. Too early?

Here is my garden so far....

IMAG0411.jpg

1- Willamettes
1- Fuggles
1- Cascade
1- Nugget

**These are all second year growth**

I'll be setting up the trellis this week hopefully once it stops raining.... uggg!

Top pic from left: 2x sterling, 2x chinook, 2x centennial, 1x nugget, 1x cascade.
Middle pic: nugget sending out a ton of sidearms, some are over a yard long already.
Bottom pic: huge nugget leaf.

The sterling and chinook are first year plants all about 1' high. The 2 centennial in the middle are 2nd year, about 17', and they've almost reached the top wire. The nugget is 2nd year, about 16' with huge sidearms.

The cascade is 2nd year, only 7' tall, leaves about 2" wide, and much less vigorous growth. It did the same thing last year. Most of the growth was close to the ground with small leaves, yet it still produced a bunch of cones. Maybe I stressed it by placing it in a bucket with no drainage for a month before transferring to the garden?

My 3rd year Cascade is about 4 feet already. The damn dog got to the Cluster about 2 years ago and they never took off since.

Finally had time and no rain yesterday to get the twine strung. Yooper gave me some hallertau and cascades that just went in a few weeks ago.

These are the voulanteer unknown variety that I found in my back yard.
IMG_20110524_101303.jpg

Here is a shot from about 40 feet up. The voulanteer ones are everywhere. I am shooting for a hop "canopy"

The new additions are on the end.

Here's my lil' guy. He's grown considerably in the last week since the temperature finally stabilized and the cold went running. Friend of mine from Houston brought this up as a small clone cutting. Pretty impressive how fast its grown. I need to move it to a larger planter already! Cascade is a wild beast!

i have cones....not to impressive my any means

I like your drying screen... I came up with the same plan yesterday while putting the screens back in the windows in my daughter's room ;)

I am going to put mine on corney's above my dehumidifier.
