It shouldn't be a problem if it's only a 1/4 inch or less. Getting the corks in just the right position takes a little practice unless you have a fancy corker.

If you are worried, use a piece of pipe or something similar to push them down by hand. As long as the item you are pushing with is smaller than the inner diameter of the bottle and you have a steady hand, it will be fine.
