My brew is in its primary fermenter. I think it may be time to bottle but the trub at the bottom of my carboy prevents me from getting a cleat sample with my wine thief. Will this cloudy settiment change my hydrometer reading and do I need to find a way to obtain a clearer sample? And if so how?

If you're gentle with the thief, and you don't shove it all the way to the bottom, you should be able to avoid filling it with trub. The pressure created when you plunge the thief down is supposed to be enough to open the valve, you shouldn't have to actually press it against the bottom.

Hope that helps. :mug:

Oh ya, I forgot to mention... this batch was a volatile one. It exploded and I lost apprx. 3 gallons of my brew when this happened. This left me with 2 to 2.5 gallons and a low liquid level.
