I just made my own heat stick kind of like the one in this link.

I have heated up two 3gallon pots of strike water to test temps and times.
I used JB weld to make sure that the heat stick was all water tight and secure like it says to do in the website above.

I have noticed with both tests, the water kind of smells funny, and taste like the water was sitting in a rubber balloon.

I think that the off flavors are comming from the JB weld. Has anyone used one of these and had the same problem. Is the JB weld bleeding chemicals into the water when it is heated?
 
I have made 2 heatsticks with J-B Weld. Several batches & I haven't noticed any off flavors.
 
More than likely you have J-B Weld on the element. Regardless, I don't believe I'd trust the stuff around a heating element.
