substitute for east kent goldings

is First Gold (UK) Pelleted Hops a good substitute for east kent goldings or is there something else that matches better?

If I have to sub, I usually go with US Golding.

I'm assuming the sub is because of price. If that is the case, then yeah, another +1 for US goldings

Don't expect them to arrive when you want.

Do expect them to be a little over weight. Poor delivery times, but great hops at a great price. You win some, you lose some. Highly reccomended by most people here though.

I used US Golding instead of EK golding in my moose drool. haven't tasted it yet but hoping that was a wise thing to do.

First Gold is a very different hop from the Goldings family, even though it has Whitbread Golding as a parent. More like the 3 C's.

If you can get it, Challenger is fantastic and FULL of that Earthy Brit character. And dual use too.

I have used First Gold and it turned out very good. I bought some Hops direct and my shipping was not slow.

Is Fuggle a bad sub for EKG?

Fuggles is very different to EKG. Fuggles is grassy or earthy, whereas EKG is floral. They compliment each other very well when used in various combinations.

Is that to say that Fuggle should only be used in combination with EKG or another hop? For a single-hopped beer, is Fuggle not a good choice?

EKG is often used as the sole hop and is very popular that way. If you were doing an English style beer and wanted to use a single hop, then that would usually be the way to go. Some people are put off by the strong earthiness of Fuggles when used for the aroma hop. EKG is also more often found in an English IPA.

I recently used Fuggle in a Witbier - one ounce for 60 minutes.
