After making a starter what is the longest you can keep it at room temp?

I plan on making a couple starters for beers that won't be brewed for 2-3 weeks--I will be stepping up the starters again a couple days prior to brewing but I didn't know if I should put them in the fridge at some point.

Considering that we leave beer in a fermenter for a few weeks and then have no qualms about reusing that yeast, there should be no problem leaving your starter around for a couple weeks. However, it also should not hurt to put it in the fridge. Just be kind, as far as temperature swings go.
