Blue Beer!?

I have a friend that goes to Japan regularly and showed me this beer. I assume it gets the blue color from algae. Anyone every try it or think they can make an odd colored beer?

They beat me to it! I was already planning out a Romulan Ale to brew in a couple weeks.

i doubt it is that color naturally. just because drift ice looks blue in large frozen chucks doesnt mean the thawed water is blue. i call shenanigans.

Spirulina is either a health food supplement made from bacteria, the bacteria themselves or a deep-water squid. Not familiar enough with Japanese tastes to know their preferences.

It says it's naturally colored in the ad copy. It's the very first word, in fact.

The blue most likely comes from the spirulina, not the water.

While we're on the topic, would food dye be a bad thing to put in beer if one wanted to make a say, light blue or purple beer just for aesthetic purposes?

I dug up the brewery's website.

It seems all of their seasonal beers are different colors:

Wiggy. I should make a green cthulhu beer. Mmmm, liquid insanity.

It would have to be an extremely light yellow beer to keep the blue dye from turning green.

Talked to my wife, who is currently visiting family in Japan, via email. She said it's only available in Hokkaido, but she ordered a ryuhyo (the blue one) and a jaga (the pink one) for me online. Hopefully they'll deliver it to her before she has to fly back here.

didn't Dogfish make a green beer using spirulina? Verdi Verdi Good or something like that? I recall reading it looked cool but tasted awful
